This position contributes to the overall success of Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary at Kawanti Coffee and Bar by embracing the culture valued by ARS. The Cafe/Bar Supervisor oversees the daily operations of both the coffee shop and bar, ensuring exceptional customer service, efficient workflow, and adherence to company policies. This role involves supervising staff, managing inventory, ensuring compliance with Alaska alcohol laws, maintaining a welcoming and safe environment, and supporting the manager in achieving sales and operational goals.
Staff Supervision

Lead and supervise a team.

Assist the manager in scheduling employee shifts to ensure proper coverage and compliance with labor laws.

Train new staff and provide ongoing coaching to ensure high performance in both coffee and bar operations.

Conduct alcohol-related training (e.g., Responsible Beverage Server Training) and ensure all staff meet legal requirements for serving alcohol.

Assist the manager in performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to team members.

Ensure staff adhere to ID-checking protocols to prevent the sale of alcohol to minors.
Customer Service

Deliver quality customer service to all guests, maintaining the philosophy that the guest comes first by discovering and responding to customer needs.

Enforce company and legal policies related to the responsible service of alcohol.

Address and resolve customer complaints or concerns promptly and professionally.

Monitor customer behavior in the bar area to prevent overconsumption and ensure a safe environment.

Approaches each guest interaction with our company’s mission and values in mind and a positive attitude.
Operations Management

Ensure smooth day-to-day operations, including opening and closing duties.

Oversee preparation and presentation of coffee, food, and alcoholic beverages to maintain quality and consistency.

Monitor workflow and delegate tasks to optimize productivity during busy periods.

Enforce health and safety regulations to maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Conduct routine checks to ensure alcohol inventory is secured and properly stored.

Maintain bar cleanliness and ensure compliance with Alaska DEC food safety and sanitation standards.
Inventory and Supplies

Monitor inventory levels for both the coffee shop and bar, placing orders to ensure stock availability without over-ordering.

Track waste and implement measures to minimize loss.

Manage alcohol inventory, including monitoring usage and placing orders while adhering to Alaska state regulations.

Receive and organize deliveries, ensuring proper storage and rotation of products.

Ensure alcohol is stored in compliance with legal standards and company policies.
Financial Responsibilities

Handle cash management, including counting tills, making bank deposits, and reconciling discrepancies.

Monitor sales performance for both the coffee shop and bar, contributing ideas to increase revenue.

Track and manage labor costs in alignment with budget expectations.

Implement cash management procedures specific to alcohol sales, ensuring compliance with legal requirements for bar transactions.
Leadership and Communication

Act as a role model for staff by demonstrating professionalism and a positive attitude.

Communicate effectively with team members and management, ensuring transparency and collaboration.

Address conflicts among staff professionally and mediate resolutions as necessary.

Provide staff with updates on Alaska alcohol laws, including any changes that may affect operations.
Event and Seasonal Promotions

Assist in developing and promoting seasonal drinks, specials, and events to drive sales in both the coffee shop and bar.

Ensure events involving alcohol comply with Alaska state laws.
Required Critical Skills, Training, and Education

Ability to learn quickly.

Working knowledge of MS Office and POS.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and request clarification when needed.

AK Food Handlers Card (required and submitted within first week of work).

Alcohol Beverage Control (AMCO) Server Permit (required and submitted within first week of work).

Preferred Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
-
Lead/Supervisor experience.
-
Barista or bar experience (minimum 1 year).
-
Customer service experience in a retail or restaurant environment (minimum 6 months).

Retail coffee shop experience.

Knowledge of Alaska state alcohol service laws and compliance requirements.

TAPS (Training for Intervention Procedures) certification or willingness to obtain it.

Proficient in point of sale (POS) systems.
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk and will occasionally be required to do some lifting (up to 50 pounds).
