Minimum Qualifications:
Previous maritime experience is not needed. However, all deckhands must be willing to learn about vessel safety and general vessel operations. Communication between captain and crew is essential to safe operations. Willingness to learn new skills and follow directions well is a critical element for deckhand hire.
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for a deckhand position:
- Possess a current CPR certificate and First Aid card. This is a prerequisite; Certification must be in hand upon arrival.
- Be willing to submit to pre-employment, random, post-accident, and for cause drug and alcohol testing.
- All applicants for the deckhand positions must be United States citizens. This is required by law under the Jones Act
- Employees are regularly required to lift and move a minimum of 60lbs, sit, stand, walk, see, talk and hear. Frequently they will need to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Employees must be able to work in harsh weather conditions for long hours on a variable schedule.
- Must be at least 21 yrs old.
- Be able to serve alcoholic beverages, handle, prep, and cook food (Will Need to obtain a current TAP certification in Alaska)
- Must be able to adapt to a wide range of schedule changes based on vessel deployment.
- Problem-solving and the ability to work well with others as a team!
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct all activities and decisions according to the five guiding principles of Major Marine Tours.
- Through training and leadership, gain an understanding of systems and maintenance needs for all vessels in order to ensure safety of passengers, and minimize downtime for the boats. Deckhands will report to a designated station for drills and/or actual emergencies and are expected to be familiar with all safety equipment and operations onboard the vessel.
- Gain an understanding of pertinent Coast Guard regulations and company policy. Integrate routine compliance into all aspects of delivering quality tours. Complete all related paperwork in a professional, accurate, consistent and timely manner. Be physically on-site and mentally prepared to work as scheduled by the management team.
- Work with the operations team, dock representative, and others to facilitate safe boarding and disembarkation, and smooth transitions during all phases of tours and transfers.
- Handle lines under the direction of the Captain.
- Work with other crew to maintain appropriate inventory on-board
- Staff the galley and assist passengers with beverage and/or food service. Maintain accountability for the vessel’s cash till.
- Maintain cleanliness of vessel; including inside space, outer decks, heads, and galley areas.
- Gain an understanding of tour routes and information provided by Major Marine Tours. Actively engage passengers in conversation (“assertive friendliness”) during all phases of contact during a tour.
- Work with management to quickly assess situations and work with the operations team to relay information via proper channels in the event of circumstances out of the norm (tour deviations, passenger incidents or injuries, etc.).
- Strive to represent Major Marine Tours in a professional and friendly manner whenever interfacing with passengers or community members.
- All deckhands are expected to help in all aspects of a tour. Each deckhand on a given day will have different responsibilities.
- All crew will need to assist seasick passengers in a respectful manner.
