Title: Youth Crew Leader  

Start/end date: May 6th, 2019 – August 9th, 2019 

Location: SCC Four Corners - Durango, CO and SCC Los Valles - Salida, CO

Wages: $500-620/week DOE, DOQ, tiered training wage during 4-week training season  

Benefits: 3 days’ discretionary time, 2 PTO days built in, Food provided while in the field, uniforms, protective equipment, other development opportunities.

Reports to: Youth Programs Manager 

Position Summary:  

SCC’s Youth Crew Leaders will spend 4 weeks in a crew leader training period, which will include a youth crew leader training and prep weeks in addition to project work. In June, leaders will co-lead two 4-week sessions with high school students ages 14-18, with a Crew Leader Development Program member. Each session will be Monday-Friday, and may be a camping crew or a day crew. Crews will complete local conservation and community agricultural based projects. Crew leaders are responsible for the safety and well-being of their crew, project implementation, creating educational opportunities, and program paperwork each week. 

Southwest Conservation Corps’ Crew Leaders perform many roles and are the key to our program’s success. The position is multi-faceted and demanding, but with opportunity for enormous rewards. Successful candidates will demonstrate resourcefulness, effective communication skills, excellent judgement and decision-making, maturity, initiative, professionalism, and the desire to devote themselves to youth, the environment and a crew experience where the needs of others are placed above oneself. The Crew Leader position requires patience, mentorship, technical aptitude, focus on efficiency, and a high level of comfort in the outdoors. It also involves an administration role, where weekly paperwork is due in a timely manner to supervisors. Crew Leaders are ultimately responsible for successes and shortcomings of the crew.
