Enthusiastic Team Players Sought by Adventure Lodge in SE Alaska

The Lodge at Whale Pass is a luxury resort in the heart of the Inside Passage catering to those seeking an active vacation. Our goal is to provide unique experiences, enhanced by the natural beauty of southeast Alaska. We seek to excel in hospitality services and provide the finest accommodations and food and beverage operation in the state.

We operate from our magical bay on Prince of Wales Island in the Tongass National Forest, a 2 hour jet flight north of Seattle. Our playground is accessed by floatplane and boasts majestic mountains, lush forests, vast wilderness, and dramatic coastline.

About The Lodge at Whale Pass

The lodge operates seasonally (Late May through September) with a staff of approximately 20 serving up to 30 guests per day.

While staff is hired for specific jobs, everyone takes responsibility to serve our guests.  This is done in a remote environment, lacking many of the conveniences of the modern world, which requires an ability to take initiative and to be comfortable with constant change and challenges.

The Lodge at Whale Pass offers understated elegance in one of the most spacious and comfortable retreats in remote Alaska. Our brand of casual luxury relieves your worldly worries and nurtures bonds with friends, family and colleagues. Guests embrace nature with every detail exquisitely planned and enjoy guided hiking, saltwater fishing, bear viewing, whale watching, freshwater and fly fishing, mountain biking, kayaking, caving, beachcombing, glacier tours and more.

The Employee Experience

Most of the staff live on-site in a communal environment and all become part of a tight, hard-working group demonstrating industry-leading hospitality and providing guests with the vacation of a lifetime.  We are a family run business and our core operating philosophy is that the guest experience is best when the employees are provided the tools and support they need to excel.

Our jobs demand extensive guest interaction and honed teamwork skills. Team members demonstrate what we refer to as the three H's: Hospitality, Hard Working and Happy. You should emanate a strong service character, bring a healthy work ethic, and want to contribute to an enjoyable work environment.  We discourage any persons who demonstrate a stubborn ego, bad attitude, or dramatic and cliquish behavior as well as those who drink alcohol or use marijuana. These traits threaten the work environment we aim to create.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with a passion for hospitality. Flexibility and the ability to work under pressure is required. They should also possess a love of the outdoors and be smoke and drug free.

Room and Board

Housing and food is provided (special diets not accommodated). Most employees live on site in shared staff quarters. Living with your co-workers heightens the need for staff to work well with and respect each other. The reward is a valuable experience that will serve you well in all future employment endeavors and the formation of life-long friends.

Employee Perks

Alumni team members of The Lodge at Whale Pass speak fondly of their seasons in Alaska.  They express gratitude for the rewards of hard work and the life-long friends they've made with coworkers and in the local community. They appreciate our culture that allows them to make a connection with guests, relieving burdens and letting nature, family, friends and colleagues create the vacation of a lifetime. New team members are quickly wooed by the joy of seeing guests satisfied and witnessing rewarding moments of accomplishment, self-reflection and reconnection. At our place, you get to make others feel like they are visiting gracious old friends. Friends that just happen to live in the middle of a natural wonder, create endless culinary delights and have the coolest toys to enjoy the great outdoors.

Many candidates first apply with dreams of working and playing in Alaska.  Staff enjoy the fresh air, wildlife-rich surroundings, beachcombing and hiking opportunities and local fishing.  They come back once they realize that they get comfortable accommodations and three meals a day without ever turning on an oven or opening a wallet, cell phones and internet connections become a secondary concern, and they share the experience with wonderful colleagues from all over the country. As a family-owned and operated business, we can provide our co-workers limited access to our adventure equipment and chances to join guests on world-class adventures.  While maintaining the quality of our gear is paramount, the intimate work environment allows us to prioritize employee experiences to enhance their ability to excel at their job.

We are committed to a happy team and promote a fun and enjoyable work environment. We enjoy seeing our intensely hospitality-minded staff constantly helping each other out, and learning from the interactions.  Deckhands offer to clean dishes and find themselves learning how to make pizza.  Captains find themselves sharing jokes with the maintenance staff over a disassembled water heater.  And anyone that wants to can learn how to make sourdough bread.

And finally, there are few places in the world that are a better Oasis from the Covid Craziness.
