Job Summary: Promotes safety of mountain environment by performing the following duties.

Essential Job Responsibilities/Duties/Tasks include the following; other duties may be assigned:

  • Ensure customers are treated courteously, safely, and efficiently
  • Mitigate skiing hazards through appropriate and consistent markings and signage
  • Evaluate skiers for injuries and administer first aid with OEC training
  • Transport injured skiers by sled, toboggan or snowmobile
  • Mitigate avalanche hazards through the application of standard forecasting and control procedures
  • Enforce policies in a fair, consistent manner, including skier safety, speed control
  • Educate guest through active personal contact
  • Actively anticipate and meet guest needs
  • Act as Mountain Dispatch
  • Positively assist and interact with other employees and departments
  • Maintain and improve patrol skills
  • Avalanche transceiver expertise
  • Assist and expedite avalanche and missing person rescues

  Required:

  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance and open, courteous and approachable attitude
  • Ability to follow all policies and procedures contained in Patrol Manual
  • Advanced level skier (no snowboarding, telemarking requires evaluation by RLM toboggan trainer) in all weather and snow conditions on all slopes, carrying heavy and/or awkward loads in a strong, stable, and controlled manner 
  • Ability to maintain a calm, controlled demeanor during difficult or trying situations or confrontations
  • Excellent physical condition-ability to hike with heavy loads
  • Basic radio communications knowledge
  • Minimum age 21
  • Good communication skills
  • Knots and ropes expertise
  • Chair evacuation and self-evacuation
  • Desire to work outside in extreme weather conditions
  • Ability to arrive by 5:30 am, regardless of weather or road conditions
  • Able to climb lift towers in ski boots
  • Ability to understand mountain meteorology, snow pack metamorphism, and avalanche dynamics
  • Ability to work longer hours and/or additional days if requested

Preferred:

  • Basic explosives experience

Experience/ Education

  Required:

  • Current CPR Certifications
  • Current Outdoor Emergency Care Certification*

*Will consider EMT-B; Wilderness EMT; Paramedic-must be willing to challenge OEC written and practical exam.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, talk, see, hear, smell, and ski.  The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects tools or controls. She/he must be capable of walking or standing 70% or more of a normal 8 hour work shift, must be capable of skiing 50% or more of a normal 9 hour day.  She/he must be capable of occasionally lifting and pushing or pulling 100 lbs or more, and frequently lifting, pushing or pulling, and carrying 20-75 lbs, must be capable of frequent climbing movements, walking on uneven terrain, walking on snow and ice, skiing, and operating a snowmobile, must be able to bend, kneel, reach, and crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions.  The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places.  They will be occasionally exposed to extreme cold, and wet conditions, fumes or airborne particles, avalanche danger and risk of electric shock.
