Blue Mountain Ranch is a small, private co-educational summer camp attracting campers from America and throughout the world. Though some aspects of camp life remain much as they were years ago and yet exciting innovations have brought the program into the future. You will be facilitating program offerings in our horse program, including but not limited to, lead/guide trail rides, horsemanship classes, and horse care. Also assist in maintaining a safe, enjoyable atmosphere and environment for campers, guests, and staff, and help in providing the best possible care for the animals.
We are looking for an someone that would like to grow their horse training skills, outdoor recreation program skills and help train our new horses! We work with natural horsemanship skills and can help you grow. The role involves:
Ensuring safety in all class situations.
Help guests and staff with their involvement in the ranch program, including trail rides and horse events.
Assist with lessons by helping pull horses from pastures and engage participants by teaching them how to be safe around horses on the ground including proper etiquette for approaching and handling horses.
Makes sure all program areas stay clean and presentable.
Ensures all tack is cleaned regularly and grooming boxes are organized.
Execute schooling, conditioning, and training routines for all equines on the property, including evaluating and training new horses for the program.
Ensure each horse uses properly fitted and safe tack, which includes saddles, bridles, protective boots (if needed).
Train, desensitize and de-spook new program horse prospects if needed. Develop and execute individualized schooling and conditioning programs for every horse on the property, to include ground and mounted work.
Qualifications:
All staff must have current FIRST AID and CPR certification upon arrival at camp
High school education or equivalent preferred; supplemented by one to two years of equestrian experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Excellent horse husbandry and horse handling skills; horseback riding: 5 years (Preferred); horse training: 1 year (Preferred)
Basic knowledge of horse health, first aid and nutrition
Ability to remain calm, think clearly and act quickly and effectively in emergency situations
Ability to maintain effective working relationships
Excellent customer service and effective communication skills
Ability to work a variety of shifts including weekends, evenings, and holidays
Work is performed essentially outdoors and while performing the duties of the job, employee is frequently exposed to loud noises and odors. Stands and walks for extended periods of time. Frequently performs moderate lifting and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 lbs.
