About the BOEC Summer Internship:

During the summer, interns support Wilderness Program courses. The responsibilities include preparing for, implementing/facilitating and evaluating the courses. Courses can range from one to fourteen days and may be held at our wilderness site or in a mobile format (camping, canoeing, or rafting trips in both Colorado and Utah). Participants of these programs include people of all ages and abilities. BOEC serves children with sensory processing disorders, courses for youth or adults with visual impairments, programs for historically disadvantaged youth, adults with traumatic brain injuries, children with hemophilia and adults with multiple sclerosis among many others. Course activities can include hiking, canoeing, kayaking, zip-lining, climbing, white-water rafting, and more. Interns are involved with course delivery from beginning to end. Interns are support staff and will not manage a course without the support and supervision of our experienced Course Directors and Instructors.

Compensation:  

  • Full room and board

  • Rec Center Pass

  • All meals on programming, weekly food stipend, full access to supplemental food basics

  • $200 Monthly Stipend

  • Free Mental Health Therapy Sessions

  • Access to BOEC outdoor gear

  • A certification in Flatwater Canoeing or Climbing Wall

Requirements:

All interns must be twenty-one years of age, have current First Aid and CPR certifications, health insurance coverage, and the ability to commit to the entire season. Ideal candidate is self-motivated, takes initiative, experience in our programming areas, and some experience working with people with disabilities and special needs. All interns must have a strong sense of hard work, flexibility, a love of the outdoors, an open mind, and a love for working with people.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP DUTIES:

  • Be a dependable and responsible team member

  • Assessing strengths and needs of participants

  • Determine participant goals/objectives and strive to create opportunities to achieve them

  • Plan/facilitate activities

  • Prep and pack for courses (food, equipment, vehicles, etc.)

  • Safely drive in a variety of conditions and terrain with passengers

  • Clean up facilities and equipment 

  • Teach up to their abilities

  • Continually strive to improve outdoor knowledge/skillsets

  • Understand methods of effective facilitation of experience

  • 100% present with participants

  • Support in the management of risk throughout programming

  • Logistical support and duties as warranted or upon request

  • Administrative tasks and duties as warranted or upon request
