Position Purpose: the Waterfront Director will oversee all waterfront lake activities (primarily swimming and boating including kayaking, canoeing, and corls) and staff ensuring the safety of all participants.
Responsibilities: Waterfront Lifeguards are responsible for the overall supervision and health of the campers, staff, and participants at the waterfront.
1. Coordination of waterfront activities and supervision
Supervise Waterfront Lifeguards and provide in-service training
Ensure compliance with all Department of Health, American Camp Association, and Department of Environmental Conservation regulations on the waterfront
Teach daily swim lessons following the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Learn to Swim Program
Lead or Assist the program lead in teaching paddling skills both on and off the water
Effectively supervise all water activities and be prepared to enact lifesaving techniques using the Eagle Island Emergency Action Plan
Ensure safety rules and procedures are followed
Evaluate Waterfront Lifeguards and staff at the waterfront
Maintain daily log (tracking weather, buddy checks for swimming, numbers of swimmers and lifeguard rotations)
Make recommendations for repairs, improvements and necessary purchases to maintain the waterfront and associated property.
2. Participation in the Camp Community
Take responsibility for the use and care of camp-owned equipment and facilities
Maintain clean beaches, boats and boathouses
Keep records and make reports as requested
Participate in required staff development and training
Participate in post-camp clean-up, inventory and evaluation
Maintain excellent communication with the campers, parents and staff
Perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director
Qualifications
Must be over the age of 21 by the start of camp.
One season of previous experience as an Aquatics Director at a New York summer camp OR two seasons of previous experience consisting cumulatively of at least 12 weeks as a children’s camp lifeguard at a swimming pool or bathing beach which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time OR at least 18 weeks experience as a lifeguard at a swimming pool or bathing beach with more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time (Department of Health Regulation)
Current Waterfront Lifeguarding Certification
Current Water Safety Instructor or Progressive Swimming Instructor or willingness to obtain
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Management or willingness to take course
Willingness to be certified in CPR for the Professional rescuer or valid certification completion date from within the year (regardless of expiration date on card)
Experience with sailing or willingness to take a sailing counselor course
A belief in adherence to, and willingness to promote the mission of the Eagle Island Camp
Willingness and ability to share skills and traditions, and to learn new skills and philosophies.
Maturity, strong leadership qualities, and good judgment.
Acceptance and appreciation of all people and the ability to live and work with children and adults of various backgrounds, life experiences, and identities
Excellent communication skills, and a willingness to work as part of an effective camp staff team
Physical Aspects of the Position
Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to working outdoors
Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of swimmers and boaters.
Ability to endure standing for long hours and perform activities such as running, bending, stooping, and stretching.
Ability to traverse varying terrain, from flat to hilly, while moving between activities.
Ability to operate with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and varying environmental conditions.
