The Historic Fleet Director of Echo Hill Outdoor School (www.ehos.org), located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is responsible for overseeing the full spectrum of activities related to the preservation, maintenance, and operational management of a fleet of historic vessels. This position combines leadership, strategic vision, and hands-on knowledge in maritime preservation, ensuring that each vessel remains in top condition, is safely operated, and is utilized for educational, community, and revenue-generating purposes. The director will lead the management of captains and crew, collaborate with management on fundraising efforts for vessel upkeep, and develop creative programming that highlights the fleet’s historical significance as well as the Chesapeake Bay Environment. Echo Hill Outdoor School’s classes and residential programs are grounded in our desire to have students live and learn closely with nature. You will take an active role in providing students with an understanding of Chesapeake Bay ecology (past, current, and future), and the role of human activity on the estuarine ecosystem. Aboard the historic fleet, you will guide participants in an enriching experience highlighting the legacies of the people of the region and their boats.
Key Responsibilities:
Fleet Management & Maintenance
Oversee the upkeep and restoration of historic vessels, ensuring they meet safety standards and maintain their historical integrity.
Develop and implement a regular maintenance schedule for the fleet, coordinating repairs and restoration projects with shipwrights and contractors.
Ensure vessels are kept in a state of readiness for programs, charters, and other events.
Leadership
Supervise and manage all captains and necessary staff ensuring that they have the necessary training, certifications, and resources to operate the fleet.
Recruit, hire, and onboard new captains as needed; foster a team-oriented environment focused on safety and professionalism.
Maintain clear communication regarding fleet operations, safety protocols, and goals.
Promote a culture of safety and compliance with all maritime laws, regulations, and organizational policies.
Budget Management
Manage the fleet budget, ensuring that expenditures for repairs, operations, and programming are in line with available resources.
Develop innovative ways to generate revenue for the fleet, including boat tours, events, educational programs, and private charters.
Work closely with the development team to identify opportunities for financial support, from government grants to private donations, for fleet preservation and programming.
Programming & Community Engagement
Develop creative and engaging public programming that highlights the historical significance of the fleet, including educational tours and public events experiences.
Collaborate with educational institutions and community organizations to develop specialized programs for schools, youth groups, and other audiences.
Promote the fleet through outreach programs, social media, and other marketing channels, ensuring that it remains a central part of the community and attracts visitors of all ages.
Strategic Planning & Reporting
Work with senior leadership to develop and implement a long-term strategic plan for the fleet, including growth, sustainability, and the expansion of programming.
Continuously evaluate and refine fleet operations and programming to ensure alignment with organizational goals and client needs.
Qualifications:
Proven experience (5+ years) in maritime operations, historic preservation, or fleet management.
Experience managing a team of maritime professionals, including captains, crew members, and other operational staff.
Preferred success in fundraising, including grant writing, donor relations, and developing revenue-generating programming.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
Ability to think creatively and innovatively to develop new programs and attract a broad range of audiences.
Passion for the environment, education of K-12 students, maritime history and preservation.
Applicants must possess a minimum USCG license of 25 Ton, Inland. Sail Endorsement required.
Previous experiential education or leadership training experience is beneficial.
