Summary

North Cascades Institute (NCI) seeks a Food Service Supervisor to uphold our high standards of meal service. This role involves leading the kitchen team, supporting the Food Service Manager, and ensuring exceptional quality. The supervisor will model professionalism and foster a trustful, diverse, and inclusive environment. This position is based out of the Institute’s field campus in North Cascades National Park at the Institute’s Environmental Learning Center (ELC). The jobsite is in a remote National Park which can experience snow-covered roads, avalanches, wildfire, smoke, wild animals, and flooding. This is a regular, full-time position supervised by the Food Service Manager.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum of one year of professional food service experience.

  • One year of supervisory experience.

  • Strong ability to delegate tasks while maintaining organizational control.

  • Flexibility to accommodate a varied work schedule, including longer days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Experience working with historically excluded populations.

  • Reliable transportation to and from work.

  • Proficiency in IT, including computer skills, spreadsheets, common software, and Microsoft Office.

  • Valid Washington State Food Handler’s Permit and thorough knowledge of food safety practices.

  • Successful completion of a background check, including employment history, national criminal background, sex offender registry, and driving history.

Preferred

  • Previous food service experience at residential learning centers, camps, schools, or similar facilities.

Responsibilities

Operations

  • Prepare daily buffet-style meals.

  • Collaborate with the Food Service Manager to ensure efficient, high-quality food service and cohesive leadership.

  • Provide administrative support as needed.

  • Train kitchen staff in the safe and efficient use of equipment and cooking tools.

  • Maintain health and food safety standards in compliance with regulations.

  • Ensure kitchen operations remain timely and within budget.

  • Participate in hiring kitchen staff.

  • Communicate with managers, staff, vendors, and contractors to ensure smooth operations.

  • Address and resolve customer complaints and grievances, providing excellent service.

  • Oversee cleanliness and organization in the kitchen, dining hall, and storage areas.

  • Actively engage in the recycling program.

Supervision

  • Supervise, schedule, and approve payroll for kitchen staff.

  • Conduct performance reviews for staff.

Other

  • Participate in general staff duties, including meetings and risk management.

  • Occasionally assist with Marketing and Development projects, such as photography or blog posts.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Food Service Manager.

Compensation

This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position subject to a winter furlough (unpaid) of one to two months. The pay rate is $23.00-$25.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. This position is subject to a $1 increase for utilizing non-NCI housing. The job location for this position is at the Environmental Learning Center.

Benefits - We offer a competitive compensation package. Benefits include the following:

  • Sick Leave – 8 hours per month.

  • Vacation Leave – 10 days per year one. Positions with furloughs may accrue less than 10 days.

  • Holiday Leave – 12 days maximum per year.

  • Service Days – 2 days per year.

  • Other paid time-off such as family leave, pregnancy leave, bereavement leave, etc.

  • Medical/dental insurance, long and short-term disability insurance, tax-deferred annuity, and contribution retirement plan.

  • Ability to participate in Institute pro deals.

  • Yearly stipend to participate in Institute programs.

Benefits are prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week.

Subsidized housing is available.
