    Bike/Ski Guide

    $25.00 / hour

    Talkeetna Gear Shop is seeking experienced and enthusiastic Bike/Ski Guides to lead guided tours for our customers. As a guide, you will take guests on unforgettable biking and skiing adventures, offering local expertise and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. Whether navigating scenic bike trails or leading nordic ski tours, the ideal candidate will be knowledgeable, customer-oriented, and passionate about sharing Talkeetna's trails with others.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Guided Bike & Ski Tours:
      Lead customers on biking and skiing tours, providing expert guidance on trails, terrain, safety protocols, and gear. Tailor trips to suit various skill levels and interests, ensuring a positive experience for all participants.

    • Customer Safety:
      Prioritize safety throughout all tours, providing clear instructions and ensuring all guests have appropriate gear and knowledge for the trip. Perform equipment checks and ensure that participants are briefed on safety procedures and trail conditions.

    • Trip Planning & Coordination:
      Assist with route selection, weather monitoring, and logistics coordination. Be knowledgeable about local conditions and adjust plans when necessary to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.

    • Gear Recommendations & Fitting:
      Help customers select and properly fit rental gear for their tour, ensuring equipment is suited to the individual’s needs and abilities. 

    • Local Knowledge & Storytelling:
      Share your knowledge of Talkeetna’s unique history, natural environment, and wildlife with customers, creating an immersive and educational experience. Highlight scenic spots, points of interest, and local culture throughout the trips. 

    • Customer Service:
      Provide outstanding customer service by engaging with guests in a friendly and professional manner. Be responsive to their needs and preferences, and ensure they feel supported throughout their journey.

    • Equipment Maintenance:
      Assist in maintaining and preparing bikes, skis, and other equipment for tours. Perform pre-trip checks to ensure that all gear is in top condition, and handle any on-the-go repairs or adjustments as needed during excursions.

    • Trail & Condition Reporting:
      Keep management informed of trail and ski conditions. Provide feedback on routes and any potential hazards to improve future trips and maintain customer safety.

    Qualifications:

    • Experience as a bike and/or ski guide or in a related outdoor guiding role
    • Strong knowledge of biking and skiing techniques, equipment, and safety protocols
    • Certification in first aid/CPR (or willingness to obtain)
    • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to engage and instruct participants of all skill levels
    • Passion for outdoor adventure and a love for Alaska’s natural environment
    • Familiarity with local trails, terrain, and weather conditions is a strong plus
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays
    • Physically fit and able to handle the demands of outdoor guiding, including carrying gear and leading full-day trips

    Bike Mechanic

    $25.00 / hour

    Talkeetna Gear Shop is looking for an experienced and passionate Bike Mechanic to join our team. This team member is responsible for performing repairs, and maintenance on a variety of bikes, ensuring our customers receive safe, well-tuned equipment to enhance their outdoor adventures. The Bike Mechanic will work closely with customers, offering advice and guidance on bike care, and will help maintain a high standard of service in our shop. 

    This is a seasonal position from May - September with option to extend through winter months.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Bike Repair & Maintenance:
      Perform a wide range of repairs, from flat tire fixes to complex drivetrain adjustments, brake replacements, suspension tuning, and more. Ensure bikes are properly serviced and safe for use.

    • Customer Service:
      Communicate with customers regarding bike repair needs, explaining technical issues in an understandable way. Provide recommendations for parts and services based on the condition of the customer’s bike.

    • Product & Service Recommendations:
      Assist customers in selecting appropriate bike components, accessories, and upgrades to meet their needs. 

    • Inventory Management:
      Help maintain inventory of bike parts, tools, and accessories. Ensure workbench and tools are organized and kept in good working order.

    • Test Rides & Quality Checks:
      Conduct test rides and thorough checks on all bikes after service or assembly to ensure proper functionality and safety before returning the bike to the customer.

    • Bike Maintenance Education:
      Educate customers on basic bike maintenance and care, helping them understand how to extend the life of their bikes and maintain peak performance between services.

    • Staff Training:
      Educate other staff members on basic bike maintenance and care, helping them understand the best ways to keep the rental fleet in top tier shape.

     

    Qualifications:

    • 2+ years of experience as a bike mechanic, with expertise in a wide range of repairs and bike builds.
    • Strong technical knowledge of bike components, maintenance, and repair techniques
    • Passion for cycling and familiarity with various bike types, including mountain bikes, vintage bikes, road bikes, and fat bikes
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
    • Good communication skills with the ability to explain repairs and technical details to customers
    • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
    • Experience with inventory management and bike service management is a plus
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends

    Front Desk Associate

    $16.00 / hour

    Talkeetna Gear Shop is seeking a friendly and organized Front Desk Associate to be the first point of contact for our customers. This role is key in providing an outstanding customer experience, ensuring smooth transactions, and offering assistance with product information, and gear rentals. The Front Desk Associate will play an important role in fostering a welcoming environment and ensuring the store runs efficiently on a day-to-day basis.

    This is a year round position, with option to work seasonally if needed.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Customer Service:
      Greet customers warmly as they enter the store and offer assistance as needed. Respond to questions about consignment gear, rental gear, services, and store policies in a friendly, knowledgeable manner.

    • Point of Sale (POS) Operations:
      Accurately handle sales transactions using the store’s POS system. Ensure proper cash handling and balance cash drawers at the beginning and end of shifts.

    • Phone Inquiries:
      Answer phone calls in a timely, professional manner. Assist customers with reservations, local information and consignment inquiries.

    • Product Knowledge:
      Stay informed about the store’s product offerings, including outdoor gear and equipment, and help customers find items that suit their needs. Offer suggestions and recommendations based on customer preferences.

    • Rental Gear & Trails: 
      Inform and assist customers in choosing the best trail to suit their desired adventure and ability level. Accurately create and manage rental reservations and assist customers in getting set up on their equipment which includes custom fitting and safety briefings. 

    • Merchandising & Displays:
      Assist in keeping the gift shop and merchandise displays organized, clean, and visually appealing. Replenish products as needed and ensure the store is well-stocked.

    • Store Operations Support:
      Assist in other areas of the store when necessary, including stocking shelves, organizing inventory, and maintaining a tidy workspace. Collaborate with other team members to ensure the smooth operation of the store.

    • Customer Relations:
      Build positive relationships with customers and create a welcoming environment that encourages return visits and fosters community.

    Qualifications:

    • Customer service or retail experience, preferably in outdoor gear or related industries
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Self driven and independently motivated
    • Ability to multitask and stay organized in a fast-paced environment
    • Comfortable handling money and working with point-of-sale systems
    • Enthusiasm for the outdoors and a basic understanding of outdoor gear and equipment
    • Reliable and punctual, with the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays

    Assistant Manager

    $20.00 / hour

    Talkeetna Gear Shop is seeking a dedicated and customer-focused Assistant Manager to help lead our team and deliver exceptional service to our customers. This position is key to ensuring smooth daily operations, maintaining high retail standards, and fostering a welcoming, adventurous atmosphere that aligns with our love for the outdoors. The Assistant Manager will support the Store Manager in all aspects of shop management, including staff supervision, inventory management, and customer service.

    This is a year round position.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Team Leadership:
      Assist in the training and management of store staff. Foster a positive, team-oriented environment where employees are motivated and well-informed about our gear and store operations.

    • Customer Service:
      Ensure an exceptional customer experience by providing knowledgeable, friendly, and efficient service. Assist with customer inquiries and resolve issues in a timely manner.

    • Sales & Inventory Management:
      Support the Store Manager in managing inventory levels, pricing consignment and ensure that merchandise is properly displayed and organized.

    • Operations:
      Help oversee daily operations, including opening and closing procedures, cash handling, and maintaining a clean and safe store environment. 

    • Product Knowledge:
      Develop in-depth knowledge of all products sold in the store, with a special focus on outdoor gear. Share this knowledge with staff and customers to enhance their shopping experience.

    Qualifications:

    • Retail or customer service experience, preferably in outdoor gear or a related field
    • Strong leadership skills
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • A passion for the outdoors and familiarity with outdoor gear and equipment
    • Detail-oriented with good organizational and multitasking abilities
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends
    • Proficiency in point-of-sale (POS) systems
