POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Leaders in Training (LIT) Program Leader is in charge of planning and implementing a program for LIT’s (ages 12-14) and is an integral part of our outdoor day camp program. The LIT Leader oversees the oldest group of campers at a small outdoor private day camp, and is in charge of their supervision and well-being the entire time camp is in session. They will lead and partake in service and wilderness projects - both on and off site - as well as a few overnight excursions around upstate NY. Trips generally consist of camping, hiking, kayaking, rafting, or other outdoor recreation.  LIT Leaders are responsible for facilitating occasional on-site camp-outs for the LIT group and younger camper groups. The candidate must possess knowledge of safety and responsibility in nature, camping, hiking, and paddling, and lifeguarding is a plus! Candidates must be at least 21 years of age and have current Wilderness First Aid training and CPR (or willing to obtain), and experience working with middle-school aged children, in either an educational or recreational setting.

The LIT Program Leader reports to the Camp Director and Assistant Director, and works with the camp leadership team to plan a weekly schedule for their camp group that focuses on service, leadership, and wilderness skills. LIT Program Leader reports to camp by June 23, 2025 and works part-time remotely with the leadership team before camp planning programming. Camp hours are Monday-Friday 8am-3:30pm, with a few evening duties per week and other miscellaneous weekend duties.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 3+ years of summer camp work experience or equivalent, preferably in a leadership role.

  • Prefer individuals with college degree, or similar educational background.

  • Prefer individuals with experience in a supervisory or management role, and very familiar with outdoor and nature activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Prefer individuals with experience in a supervisory or management role and very familiar with outdoor and nature activities.

  • Must be comfortable with high levels of interactions with Parents and volunteers.

  • Must currently have (within 1 year) or be willing to obtain CPR certification and Wilderness First Aid.

  • Able to walk on uneven terrain, carry a backpack with first aid and other supplies, and engage in sports and other physical activities, while supervising children for the full duration of the camp day outside.

  • Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and willingness to drive a 12-passenger camp van.

Expected Duties Include:

  • Develop and maintain weekly LIT group schedules, with guidance and approval from camp admin.

  • Plan and prepare for excursions on and off-site.

  • Understand and follow NYS camp regulations and policies.

  • Provide guidance and leadership to younger staff assigned to the LIT program.

  • Protect the safety and well-being of campers in your care at all times.

  • Be a role model to campers and staff in both your attitude and behavior.

  • Represent the camp in a positive and professional manner when in the community and off-campus.

  • Perform other duties deemed necessary by camp administration.
