The Adventure Trips Director facilitates off-site adventure-based programs for YMCA Camp Watia including White Water Rafting and Horseback Riding. This role is responsible for the coordination and safe execution of 2 one-week long camping trips. This role is predicated on the ability to mitigate risk, respond to volatile situations and maintain a high level of environmental stewardship. The Adventure Director will uphold and follow all the policies of YMCA Camp Watia and the American Camp Association as it relates to Adventure trips and programming.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

DAILY TRIPS:

  • Serve as the primary liaison between YMCA Camp Watia and the vendors while leading day trips

  • Transport campers daily to and from adventure vendor facilities offsite

  • Prepare, inspect, and organize necessary equipment for trips including but not limited to: helmets, gloves, sunglasses, identifying headbands, whistles, and other adventure supplies and equipment

  • Coordinates with specific cabins to ensure campers are prepared for trips with necessary clothing, sometimes including: Jeans, closed-toed shoes, water apparel, water shoes, and other gear

OVERNIGHT TRIPS:

  • Responsible for the health and wellness of all adventure trip participants including the dimensions of physical, mental, emotional, social, and nutritional wellness

  • Review and understand the Emergency Action Plan with the Senior Program Director to establish: travel and route directions, camping location and venue, daily schedule, emergency action points, and local emergency contacts

  • Conduct a pre-trip orientation with all participants to establish roles, norms, expectations, and necessary technical skills for the success of the trip

  • Transport participants to and from the camping locations and adventure activities

  • Plans and budgets meals for the week including recipes, shopping lists, food purchases, packing and storage of food

  • Facilitate programs for both educational value and exclusively for fun during the trip

  • Maintain availability at all times of the day and night while away from the main body of YMCA Camp Watia

  • Responsible for completing post-trip paperwork and trip evaluation

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 21 years old

  • Must possess a valid U.S. Driver's License

  • Must be able to pass the examination for and routinely drive a 12-passenger vehicle

  • Must possess valid Wilderness and Remote First Aid and CPR Certifications before the start of the Adventure Trips

  • At least 1 year of overnight camping experience required

  • Must have a record of trips lead and taken

  • Leadership skills and experience working with kids required

  • Experience in rafting and horseback riding preferred
