About Capon Springs and Farms, Inc.
Capon (pronounced "K-pin") Springs and Farms is a true old-fashioned getaway, which is located less than 2 hours from the Washington DC Metropolitan area. The resort is located on 4700 secluded acres with breathtaking scenery. A throwback to a simpler time and a slower pace of life, Capon offers a chance to unplug and reconnect with family, friends, and nature!
Our History: Located at the foot of the Great North Mountain in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, the Capon Springs rises at the base of a huge vertical outcropping of Oriskany sandstone. The word Capon is thought to be of Shawnee origin meaning healing waters, medicine waters, or waters that heal. Henry Frye was the first to European to discover the springs circa 1765 and brought his wife to soak in the springs to heal her rheumatism. As the reputation of the water grew, a four-story Mountain House hotel with 168 rooms and room for 500 guests was built to accommodate the growing number of visitors who came to “take the waters”. In 1911 a fire destroyed the Mountain House, and the area fell into a state of disrepair for many years. In 1932, Lou Austin purchased the property on the county courthouse steps, and it is still owned by the Austin family today, entering its 93rd year in 2025.
In 1994 Capon was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, with many of the buildings in use today, dating back to the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
With multiple generations of Austin family members, guests, and co-workers returning to Capon every season, it truly feels like "Coming Home".
