The Employee Experience
YMCA Camp Oakes is a year round camp that offers several programs such as Outdoor Education, Summer Camp, and Groups and Retreats. In keeping with the traditions of the YMCA, campers, and staff enjoy the spiritual uplift that spending time up in the mountains can bring. We provide programs that reinforce what it means to "be a good person," we support and develop positive character, and demonstrate how that can bring meaning to their everyday lives, by emphasizing the foundations of the YMCA--Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
Ideal Candidate
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- High school diploma or equivalent
- CPR/First Aid certification (preferred)
- Experience working with youth in Outdoor Education, Resident Camp, Day Camp, Summer Camp or like setting (preferred)
- Ability to connect with people of diverse backgrounds
- Physical ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills including: standing, hiking and/or climbing for extended periods of time
- Must be able to live on-site during the program season
Room and Board
Shared onsite housing provided for Program Staff. Shared common area with kitchen and laundry units.
Employee Perks
Outdoor Education is a year round position and is considered Full Time. Includes Health Benefits and accrual of PTO.
Summer Camp is for the summer season only and is considered Part Time.

Getting Here and Getting Around
You are responsible for your own transportation while working at camp. However, if you need a ride initially getting to camp, we can do that.
- Common pick-up spots: Ontario Airport (ONT), Fairfield YMCA, & San Bernardino Bus Station.
Camp Oakes is in Big Bear, CA and 20 mins from grocery stores, restaurants, and outdoor recreation activities. Camp is a tight-knit community and rides into town can be arranged.
For Fun
Camp Oakes/Big Bear and the surrounding area have many activities available to enjoy.
Activities on camp:
- Archery, Rockwall, BB guns, Mine Shute, Hiking, Arts N Crafts, Canoeing, Fishing, Zipline, Pool, Observatory/Stargazing.
Activities in Big Bear:
- Big Bear Lake is Southern California's #1 four-season outdoor destination. That means you get a different Big Bear experience in every season from Boating, Fishing, Hiking, Mountain Biking and Horseback riding, to skiing, tubing and snowboarding.
Activities in the surrounding area:
- Camp Oakes is 2 hours away from Los Angeles and close to major attractions such as Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood.
